Informal Olympics by Bob Ballard SGFA

This picture is like those recipes for rescuing ruined meals (“Begin with burnt chicken…”) because I initially spoiled the blue underpainting of the sky, part of which still remains visible. Bad-temperedly I obliterated it with black, thereby accidentally creating a negative surreal effect accentuated by deliberate symmetry. The figures reflect the habit of people informally exercising in public places and by excluding cast shadow I have got them to float in what is apparently low gravity. Or maybe we had all been inhaling lighter than air gas. You have to be so careful when drawing breath…
