“This is one of many paintings I have made of this North Cornwall fishing village.  I run painting holidays at Tregardock, near Delabole, and we always visit Port Isaac on our first day to fill ourselves with inspiration.

This part of Cornwall has retained a lot of its distinctive atmosphere and hasn’t let commercialism and tourism completely take over. It retains authenticity with fishing boats and a fish market, and its sheltered harbour flooded with sunlight always inspires.

In this case I was inspired by the bright blue October sky reflected in the wet beach, the blue of the shadows and slate on the facades of old cottages that surround the harbour, and by the compositional focus of the lonely fishing boat, similarly coloured, unloading in the sunshine.

The beach has been used as a temporary car park for visitors, but on this occasion it was empty of everything except boats, seagulls, sunlight…and one or two artists!

Just after visiting the harbour I created Blue Boat, Blue Skies, Port Isaac on paper in the studio at Tregardock from the sketch below, using acrylic ink, soluble graphite pencil, oil pastel and acrylic paint.”
